3 perf film finish, no telecine logs
Hi all: I am doing a no-budget short film that was shot on 3 perf film. Although I just finished work on a feature that mixed 3 and 4perf film in a DI, with no problems, I got thrown a loop on this short. Despite my insistence that I get flex or ale file done with the telecine, the telecine house delivered us a telecine with no logs. I know from my experience on the feature that my ale’s all had perf information in the logs, and that when I did cutlists, they included a perf field in addition to the key # frames. If this was a 4 perf project, I would just enter the key #’s from the visual burn-in into the database and hope for the best, but I’m not sure what to do when it comes to 3 perf. How close will doing that get me to the correct frame? We are finishing as a DI but given the budget, no one wants to spend time eye matching frames.
I am on an older version of Avid (pre-Meridian era), but that is the least of my problems!
Any advice or similar experiences would be much appreciated.

Does the burn-in contain a perf indicator, either as a number or a moving bar? If so, enter that value into the Perf column on the older system. Dump all the master clips into a sequence, make a 3 perf list then verify against the burn-in.
The bar type burn-in uses top position as per 1, middle as 2 and bottom as 3. Also look for the KeyKode rollover as 21, 21 and 22 to indicate which perf cycle you are in.

Thanks so much! There is a moving bar in the burn-in. I noticed it had 3 positions, but had no idea how that corresponded to the perf. I don’t quite follow your note about looking for the 21,21 and 22 Key Code rollover to indicate what perf-cycle I’m in though….although I may not need to, since I have the moving bar in the burn-in? I used to have a better handle on 3-perf but I’m a little rusty. The last DI I did using 3-perf just used our original flex files in conjunction with their own software, and I would just give them edl’s.
Anyway, that information has saved the day. I will run the test you suggested.

Using the bars you are all set. The suggestion for the keykode rollover was to look at the frame count of the KeyKode. If it rolls over at 20 back to 00 then it is either perf 1 or perf 2. If the next “foot” rolls over at 20, then the previous was a perf 1 and the current one would be perf 2. If the rollover is 21 then 00 then it is a perf 3.
