Greetings all. Long time reader, first time poster. I’m wondering if anyone has encountered lagging multicam playback when useing xdcam codecs?
Some background info. I’m editing footage from three EX1’s recorded in studio, something I’m fairly versed in executing in FCP 7. However, we’re making the transition to Premiere and I figured there’s no better time to switch than the present.
I’m useing “XDCam Transfer” to ingest the bpav files. I then import the resulting mov’s into Premeire and make a new sequence via the “New Sequence from clip”, adding my three clips to it. I manually sync them (plural eyes Premeire licence in the near future!) with the video stacked and only the one clean audio track, then duplicate the sequence, delete everything from the copy’s timeline and drag the original sequence into the copy. After enabaling multicam on this track, the multicam viewer looks all set to rock n roll. However, after a random amount of time (between half and 2 seconds usually) my multicam viewer video playback lags horrible while the audio continues unaffected. This makes attempting to view let alone cut between angles increadibly difficult.
I’m operating on Imac’s, with 2.66 intel duo core 8gb with CS6 at home and 2.93 i7 16gb CS 5.5 at the office. The lag is less on the more powerful office machine, but not enough to make a huge difference. Rendering the timeline helps a bit as well, but again not enough to make multicam tolerable. The issue seems to get worse the more cuts are made. I can’t help but wonder if it’s a codec issue, or if there is a better way I should be ingesting this footage?
I’m very new to premiere, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a workflow issue. I searched around (seek first, than ask), but haven’t found a solution. I surrender to the power of the cow!

    Thanks all,
    André

So converting the Xdcam EX footage to Pro-res seems to fix a lot of the glitching, which would seem to confirm it being a codec issue. However, I was under the impression that Premiere worked pretty well with the Xdcam family of codecs. Am I wrong, or is there some workflow that I am simply not privy to?

We did finally find a solution, for any interested. When setting up a new project, in the “New Sequence” window change the editing mode to “custom”. This gives you access to the “Preview File Format” under “Video Previews” at the bottom of the window. Changing this to “Quicktime Desktop” and selecting ProRes 422 as the Codec fixed our multicam lag issue, as well as some other multi-display problems we had encountered.
