offlining a feature shot on red 2k @ 23.98…log and transferred into FCP by outside company at prores 2k (not Prores1080 which we had suggested)…how do i monitor this outside of the FCP? i have systems with both Kona 3 and Black Magic Decklink Extreme cards, both support 2k…is there a way to get output to either a broadcast monitor or 42″ plasma, both 1080p displays?

plasma is being fed via HDMI, and broadcast would obviously take SDI.

Use the 2K Prores Easy setup on the Kona Card, then Open the Kona control Panel and turn on the 2K Crop function and set the crop to be 1920×1080.

Hint: to access an Open Kona Control Panel Live in FCP position the KCP so that it it viewable behind FCP without having any of the FCP interface covering i, while in FCP hold down the command (apple) key and you will be able to move the crop around while the video is playing.

I do not believe that your BMD Extreme card can do this, but I might be wrong.

cool…i’ll try that, as well as try it on the BM, although as we know the control panel is definitely different between AJA and BM

if you have a 30″ LCD monitor there, this is a very inexpensive way to monitor 2K media –

If you have the BM card, ensure you have the latest drivers for the series, as it lists a number of new setups for 2k and RED footage. I cannot verify your exact requirements will be met, but it certainly looks as though there is considerably more support for your workflow – and about time too!

In answer to the original question – yes! The live scaling options in the Kona and BM cards are specifically to facilitate 2k production, as few FCP suites have 2k monitoring….

What actual resolution have they transferred them at? RED 2k is not the same as 2k for film, and at 2:1 (a common RED frame aspect) it’s actually 1024 vertically – so below the 1080 required for full HD resolution, and would leave bars at the top and bottom of an HD frame.

    Just a thought.

Then get a Kona3, because all formats and frame rates necessary have been supported for as long as the camera has been a shipping product and even RED endorses the the Kona 3 cards for their workflows.

Not a question about ” if ” your requirements will be met, since every SMPTE broadcast format is supported by the Kona3 hardware.

    [gary adcock] “Then get a Kona3 …”

    Hey Gary,
I believe the OP has stated that he already has both Kona 3 and BMD systems to hand. You’ve made a great post regarding the Kona 3 and your staunch support of the board (as with any and all AJA products) is very well founded … but Ben is just offering up some additional information for the OP, no reason to disrespect that.

[Andy Mees] “but Ben is just offering up some additional information for the OP, no reason to disrespect that. Andy “

I did not think I offered any disrespect Andy (I believe that Ben did misquoted me,it is my understanding that you can modify any 2K output live in 1080 within the BMD product line)

Ben is highly regarded here on the Cow, by myself and many others.

Yet when we delve into the guts of why a person chooses one product or another, sometimes the difference in product lines is in what one product does over another, and as Ben stated he was not sure if the product the OP already has would capable for the workflow they were trying to achieve. I am sure that the K3 mentioned would.

and yes I did incorrectly state to “get” the kona.
too many posts to keep up with some days- sorry Joe, did not mean you had to go buy a new one.
