25p/25i issue
I originally asked about this in the Avid Editing Basics forum, but it’s been 10 days since then and no-one’s been able to give me a full answer (thanks to Jon Zanone for trying though). My apologies if it’s considered bad forum etiquette to post the same question in multiple places, but I really need some help with this.
As a new Avid Xpress user, I foolishly started a new project as 25p even though it should have been 25i since the footage I was going to use is interlaced, not progressive. However, I didn’t realise this until a few days later, by which time I’d already captured all of the tapes into the 25p project and started editing.
My question is, is this a major problem? The footage plays back fine within Avid. If I continue to edit interlaced footage within a 25p project, will the quality of the final product suffer?
If so, is there any way I can convert the project from 25p to 25i? I don’t want to start over, I’ve already done a lot of work.
It was suggested that I try starting a new 25i project and open the bins from the 25p project in it. However, when I try this I get warnings from Avid about mixing progressive and interlaced footage in the same timeline. Is this just because of the conflicting project settings, or has the footage actually been compromised in some way through capturing it within a progressive project despite it being interlaced?
Any help here would be much appreciated.

You can go either way – what you will get in a 25p project is all FX will be processed “frame based”. for example, a PIP moving across the screen will update 1/25th instead of 1/50th so it may appear to be not as smooth depending on speed. Same with rolling titles (vertical), etc.
You can open that bin in a 25i, the warnings are just there to well.. warn you that you are doing it – but you can continue working just fine.
