    hey guys
    long time since I’ve been here and I’ve never been let down, so I hope my luck continues!
    Sp here goes:
    I’ve just shot a project on a canon xl2 on 25p 16X9.

    Now I’ve never captured progressive footage before so I really wanna do it right.

    My current sequence and capture presets are on DV PAL 48 khz anamorphic. Will these presets let me capture my footage in proper 25p or will it capture it interlaced? Is there any toying about I have do in these presets or any other settings to be able to capture the footage in progressive? ( Ive noticed in the Sequence preset of DV PAL 48 khz anamorphic you can change the “FIELD DOMINANCE” to “odd”, “even” or “None”. will changing it to “none” make sure its progressive?)

    or does the fact that I have shot in 25p make FCP detect and capture the footage uninterlaced automatically?

    and finally how do I actually check if the darn footage has been captured in progressive? is there a tab or item properties that clearly marks this footage as 25p?

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Theres a ton of 24p capturing advice out there but none of properly capturing 25p (not even in the FCP manual!)

    Don’t fret mate. Your camera has captured the footage progresively but it is still stored as an interlaced signal. Instead of capturing one field at a time it has captured one whole frame and then stored that in both fields.

    The short and curlies of it all is that just capture it and edit as if it was regular PAL DV footage. Your system won’t actually know that it’s 25p but it doesn’t have to.

    this is not quite true I think:

    – while capturing with PAL preset doesnt alter the 25p footage (which is in fact 25psf = progessiv segmented fields)

    – when editing, you should set your sequence to progressiv, otherwise transitions etc would introduce interlaceing

    How do I set my sequence to progressive??

    Sorry If I sounded like a total noob!

    Are there any other tips or tricks I should know about when it comes to capturing or editing in progressive in Fcp?

    Oh! Heres another question: been trying to export my anamorphic footage out in quicktime – but it keeps appearing in squashed 4:3 when I open it in quicktime..
    how do I go about keeping it nice and widescreen like in the export? Any particular codec or file format I need to use? any settings?

    Without getting my pedantic head on, I’m just querying this because I am genuinely interested. The camera itself does store the progressive frame within an interlaced video signal by storing the lines in a certain field order. Would it not be wise to maintain the correct field dominance that the signal started with?

    Or a better version of the question is, what problems might you encounter (if any) if you don’t maintain the field dominance of a progressive frame encoded within an interlaced signal?
