I shoot with a Canon HV30 which in either 24p or 30p actually uses progressive sequential scan and, in the case of 24p, 3:2 pull-down. When I import this to PPro CS5, it looks great on the monitor. My question relates to editing and effects. HDV is highly compressed with only some of the frames being complete and those in between just the changes from the previous complete frame. If I make a cut on an in between (incomplete) frame, what happens? How does PPro interpolate the first frame in the second shot when it’s corresponding complete reference frame is gone? Likewise when an effect is applied, what does PPro do with in between frames when no reference frame is available?
The big question is, when working with HDV, should the file be pre-rendered to ensure every cut occurs on a complete frame?

Hi Dale,
This is all handled behind the scenes. You say the frames are “gone” when you make a cut, but in reality, the original file is still intact on the hard drive and is being referenced for playback. Whatever edits you make on the timeline are simply “pointers” to the video clip, you are not altering the actual clip. Just edit and don’t think too hard about this stuff 😉
