    Hi All,

I’m doing the online for a feature doc. We’re pretty much done except for one small little issue. The project was shot with DVX100b’s at 24p, except for one interview when the camera was mistakenly set at 24pA. We are editing on a 23.98 sequence, using FCP 5.0.4.

The problem is some type of interlace issue when there’s motion. I have a picture of it here:

    https://www.kapakai.com/Kapakai/photo.html

I wasn’t involved with the capturing, so I don’t know how it was done. The clip info says it’s 23.98. I also don’t have access to the original tape to try and recapture it.

I can solve the problem by adding the de-interlace filter (either upper or lower field) or the flicker filter, though it doesn’t do as good a job. I did correct a couple of other shots with the same person with the same issue, but much more pronounced, using the flicker filter. This eye issue is really subtle and we’ve missed it until now (many other problems much more pronounced :-), and the fact that it’s literally in the blinking of the eye. It’s only really one or 2 frames at a time. But the shot is a CU and on a big screen it just jumps out.

Anyway, my questions would be, what is causing this, and is the de-interlace or flicker filter the best solution to solving it?

I’m not at the computer that the project is on, but the only other thing I haven’t tried is to use Tool>Remove Advanced Pulldown and see if that helps – but like I said, it’s already at 23.98.

I did play it on a 42″ plasma 1080p HDTV from a 24pDVD that was uprezzed, and didn’t see the issue. Final output will be 24pDVD with possible film festival showings from DVD, HDCam, or Digibeta.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Boyd

    Hi Dave,

thanks for the response – what you described is exactly what happened. The footage was accidentally shot in 24pA, the editor didn’t know, and it was all captured at 24p.

I was able to get the original tape and will be recapturing. Here’s a question, I know I can use the preset that removes the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, but will that create problems playing back out of the timeline when mixed with the other 24p footage that had a 2:3:2:3 pulldown? There’s a playback cadence that is selected where FCP adds the cadence back in and you choose which pulldown to use.

OTOH, it may not matter as we are going to 24pDVD.

What I was thinking of doing was capturing at 29.97, use the Nattress standards converter to change the 24pA to 24pN, then Cinema Tools to remove the 2:3:2:3 cadence to maintain a consistent look.

I could try it both ways, though I hate to be redundant for no reason. And unfortunately, I’ll be the one replacing the clips by hand.

    Thanks,

    Boyd
