    Hi all.
I have a question. I have a video which i edited in FCP and HD 24p format.
I want to export it to 25fps (upper fields) for TV and it does not play smoothly.
It plays back like its missing a frame. I know thats the reason, but how can i fix that?

    thanx.

Export the 24fps video using the Export->Quicktime movie option (same settings, self contained) bring it into cinema tools and conform to 25fps. This will result in a 4% faster playback but it will be smooth and this is the normal way to handle 24fps footage in PAL. Create a timeline in FCP with the correct settings (I guess you are going from HD to SD) and reimport your quicktime into this sequence. Export…

Dear Stephan thank you very much for your answer. It worked great!

Now, what happens if i want to keep the same duration?
Have any good ideas for that issue?

    Thanx.

Buy Nattress Standards Coversion plugins ($100 at https://www.nattress.com) and use the included plugin called G film Converter. It will convert your 24P material to 25i by inserting an extra field every half second.

I haven’t tried it myself but I believe the process i similar to how Avid handles 24fps footage in PAL, and the Avid playout looks okey. I have seen field problems on some occasion but I think that has been due to incorrect field order settings at some point in the process.

    Hi Stephan.
I tried the Nattress demo plugin but the result is not as good as the cinetools conformation. You can actually see the frame blending.
I believe that there is NO way to achieve the movement smoothness and preserve the duration.
I was wondering, the hollywood studios, when they are transfering a 24p movie to 25 PAL do they change the duration?

    Thanx.

    I think i got it.
Sometimes the easiest way works great.
I conformed the 24p 1920×1080 file to 25 with Cinematools,
create a new 25fps 1920×1080 timeline and changed the speed of the clip so it matches the duration of the 24p. Left it render for half a day(!) but the result is the best of them all.
What do you think of this solution?

Customized hardware solutions are used that retime the video and relay the audio with pitch modulation down to or up to the frame rate needed. These tools (from snell & wilcox and teranex) are very expensive, often costing over $500 USD per hour for conversion of this caliber.
