Had a camera guy shoot 24p on his varicam and looking for workflow options. Working on FCP with a Blackmagic HD card. What is the best workflow for capturing this footage, cut spots, and output SD for broadcast. Digitize with firewire at 60 then convert with framerate conversion tool drops the audio. I believe the tool is specifically for slomo correct? So suck in at 24? How should the conversion to 29.97 happen. Putting 24 footage into a 30 timeline doesn’t cut it. I know sucking the footage in SDI will give me the proper 3:2, but we would like to finish spots in HD for future media buys. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

I have done this regularly, and blogged about it. You can gleen my blog for information (www.lfhd.net). I don’t go into too many specifics, as I and others earn part of our living by consulting to people about post workflows. I paid a couple people and I think it would be kinda cheap of me to turn around and give that out for free.

But the blog does have many tips on parts of my workflow. I did exactly what you are talking about. SHooting 720p24 DVCPRO HD, editing 23.98 and delivering an HDCAM master and digibeta downconverted dubs.

Thanks Shane. Our issue is we are renting the Deck and have 10 initial spots, with many revised spots to come through the year. None will be broadcast in HD anytime in the near future. So we are going the way of digitizing SD through SDI to get the proper 3:2 on ingest, and will use edl to “HD” the spot later if/when needed. For all of the slomo shot at 40 / 60, we are doing the frame rate convert back onto a 60 base timeline out to HD tape. Then ingesting it through SDI as well. Sound about right? I know from now on though, to request all different frame rates on different tapes. Next week we have some spots being shot on the Red Camera, hopefully that will go a little easier, as we are testing workflow prior to shooting. Thanks again for the help.
