Independent short being shot on a Panasonic DV camera (DVX-100A) in 24p. I have an Adrenaline, which has 24p as an optional resolution. I’ve never worked in DV 24p before. I ran a test, capturing some footage into the Avid, and it looks like it’s been interpolated wrong. I tried every selectable combination of 2:3 pulldown, and the image still looks shakey and warped. I must be doing it wrong… there’s no additional hardware needed to edit in 24p, is there?

The Adrenaline’s manuals are not detailed enough. Anyone able to throw me a list of steps?

FYI, the producer wants to edit in 24p, output in 24p back onto a master DV tape, and have that master able to be upconverted to film.

I’m too used to NTSC. Help!?!?

Are you coming in over the FireWire connection, SDI, or analog?
Was it shot with ADVANCED or NORNAL pulldown?
What resoluition are you capturing at?
Are these tapes the original masters or dubs?
Are you capturing from a deck or from the camera?

Make sure you are in a 23.976p project for starters.

    Analog. I should be FireWire, shouldn’t I?

Was it shot with ADVANCED or NORNAL pulldown?
    Not sure. What’s the difference?

What resoluition are you capturing at?
DV (I think it’s listed as DV25/411?)…anything higher would be a waste, wouldn’t it?

Are these tapes the original masters or dubs?
    Originals

Are you capturing from a deck or from the camera?
    Deck

Make sure you are in a 23.976p project for starters. “
Is that like a 24p drop frame mode?

Thanks so much for the help!

    OK… here’s what you do –

You must be in a 23.976p project since all DV 24p cameras actually shoot at 23.976.

Connect via FireWire and set up the deck configurations for your deck.

Not knowing whether the footage was shot ADVANCED pulldown or not will put you through a little trial and error until you figure it out. If you play the tape back in the camera, the on screen display will tell you 24pA or just 24p. The “A” denotes ADVANCED.

Let’s assume advanced. Go to your Film/24p settings and set the Pulldown cadence menu to 2:3:3:2 (ADVANCED pulldown).

The capture some material on the fly. If it looks good when playing back, then you are all set, the flags are being seen during capture and the proper frame is being dropped to create the original 24 frame capture (23.976).

If it is wrong, then go back to the settings and check the Cadence relationship to 01:00:00:00 to “A”. Then try again. If it is still wrong, go to the Film/24p settings and set the pulldown cadence menu to 2:3:2:3 (NORMAL) and capture again.

Once you get capture that is correct, you are all set for either ADVANCED or NORMAL.

Hopefully the entire tape (or shoot for that matter) was done with one type of pulldown versus the other. I had a job where 5 takes out of the entire tape were NORMAL with the rest ADVANCED.

Some decks can hide the flags and subs to analog or digibeta for example will lose the flags. That is why you have the “override” features in the Film/24p settings to allow capture anyway.

Thanks for the detail. I’ll try it tomorrow!

24p Advanced worked, but regular 24p won’t work with my version 2.0.2 of the Adrenaline software. I’m told it will work when I upgrade to 2.1.5 (today’s agenda).

    Thanks for the help!

NORMAL will work if coming in over SDI or analog. 2.1 added the abiity to do NORMAL capture over FireWire. Same for Xpress Pro.
