24p / 23.98 sync problem?
Posted by Laurie Pepper on June 12, 2023 at 10:26 pmThe “audio track” is from a magnetic film track. FCP reads that track as 24 p.
The video track has been transferred from film negative and FCP reads that track as 23.98
I’m having some synching problems.
Is that the cause?
If it is, what do I do?
Believe me, these two are supposed to go together. They’ve been rescued and are over 40 years old.

June 13, 2023 at 1:09 amJust out of curiosity, is this separate from the question about “23.96 video / 24 audio”? The numbers are slightly different.

June 13, 2023 at 1:28 amHey Laurie,
You would normally describe it as 23.97, which accurately is 23.976 fps.
It all goes back to the olden days of converting to NTSC.
https://osgamers.com/frequently-asked-questions/why-23-976-fps-and-not-24If both your media has the same frame-rate, there should not be noticeable out-of-sync problems.
There are smarter people here on FCPX that might be able to identify the problem.I would investigate 2 immediate issues:
Did the footage arrive in the same frame-rate (and as it as separate files, or “locked” together in one media file)? And, what frame-rate is your time-line set at?
Is it 23.97 or 24 fps?Keep in mind that FCPX likes to lock your import into a specific codec standard, rather than let it run free like other NLE’s – this can be a hindrance, or saviour…
There is an old CreativeCow thread here – it is nearly 10 years old and hopefully FCPX has moved on, or not. But might be worth a read:

June 14, 2023 at 11:07 pmI was part of the referenced thread way back when. I believe my suggestion still holds. Wave Agent from Sound Devices allows you to reset the audio metadata of a wav file. It’s free. Change the audio from 24 to 23.976 and it should sync.

June 15, 2023 at 1:19 amYou may try selecting your audio and video tracks in the Browser, then go to the Menu Bar > CLIP > Synchronize Clips.
Really hope this solves the issue.

June 15, 2023 at 1:03 pmNormally there shouldn’t be a sync issue based on frame rate, as frame rate has nothing to do with audio. If both audio tracks are the same sample rate, they will sync. Standard video audio rate is 48kHz. Verify they’re both set to that. If one isn’t, Compressor can convert it just fine. So the big question is, what are the sample rates of both audio files? And FYI, that has to be the worst article on frame rates I’ve ever read.
