    Hello:

I’m a DP who has encountered a lot of frame stepping on jib moves at 24p 1080i. The footage was shot on th HDX 900 and the tapes are clean, no problems. The footage was digitized at 422 pro res and standard.

I am not a final cut editor and my knowledge is limited in this area. The client is editing on final cut 5.1 with a G5. I don’t know much else. I don’t know is monitors, or QT’s or anything. Is there something that can be done?

    Thanks

    Hey Joe,
24P is a tricky format. If you are digitizing it with anything but firewire, Final cut may be transcoding the footage to 60i and adding back the duplicate frames that would be removed if Final cut is set to 1080 24p thru firewire. If the final output is to be delivered on anything that wont be played back on a computer monitor, or anything played at 60i, the duplicate frames will be played back with stepping in any horizontal pans. If the footage stays at 24F and played on a digital monitor, the stepping will not be noticed. It is important for final cut to be set correctly. The easy setup is the best way to insure the footage is digitzed correctly. Not sure why you would be going to Pro res and not staying native dvc pro hd.

    Hi Keith:

I guess the thought process was that because the client has an older version of FCP (5.1) that he couldn’t take in the HD. Standard and pro res were used. Again, I’m not knowledgeable in this area so I threw it out to see.

Pro res only works well on an intel Mac I dont run 5.1 anymore but I thought Pro res was introduced with Ver 6.

    Keith:

Again, I’m totally out of my element in this world. I light and shoot.
I’ve taken it upon myself to try to correct the problem for the client.
Is it fair to say that if I re digitize at DVC Pro HD 24P 1080i, the problem will go away?

I truly appreciate your help with this!

First, you can shoot 24P (or) 1080i, they’re different things, so it has to be one or the other. The 900 shoots at 1080i or 720P, so if it’s 24P it’s 720 not 1080. P is progressive i is interlaced, you can’t do both at the same time (unless you have a camera that shoots its P by changing i into P in the camera (which I’m pretty sure the 900 doesn’t). And he’s working in 5.1 with ProRes? I don’t think so.
So if he’s shooting 1080i, is he looking at it on a computer monitor? If so, he needs to view on a video monitor.

I misspoke. You can shoot the 900 in 1080 as 23.98P or pA. But 24P is only 720. (But P is still not i!)

The 900 does indeed shoot at 23.98 but does a pull down to 29.97 in 1080i. So it’s a compressed HD 1080i. Our main issue in all of this is that the FCP system being used cannot handle the files. They are QT converted from pro res to standard.

    Ed-

The 900 can indeed shoot 24p in 1080 or 720 and pulldown need to be extracted from either format either during or after capture, depending on what format was shot.

    Joe-

Did you shoot 24p or 24pA?

Also, FCP 5.1 is not ProRes capable. If they don’t have FCP 6, how’d they capture ProRes?

    Jeremy:

we shot 24p 1080i. my editor digitized it on his 6.0 as a QT converted from pro res to standard. The client has his own final cut at 5.1. He’s seeing some stutter and i am as well in his QT, but several people I’ve sent the QT file to haven’t seen the problem. I am at a loss to figure out the issues. It could be a lot of things from monitor resolution to 24p, 23.98 etc. His QT was sent out at 24 frames not 29.97 at 720 x 480. Lot’s of issues

also, will 5.1 capture dvc pro hd?
