    hello!

    basically:

    1) i have an avid media composer 2.8 on an imac.
    2) it is a 24fps project. 2-perf/techniscope (oh hell!). sound comes digitally from a “deva” and fits by setting up the 24fps project, because of avid, which is playing the telecined-footage at a rate of 25 according to the sound.

    questions:
    1) the project is set in europe where they have to shoot 25fps sometimes to get monitors (in frame) working (and not flickering becaus of the 24fps/50Hz issue)
now: how can i mix these kinds of 24fps and 25fps footage in a 24fps project?
    2) this first question in respect: what to do with the sound then? pitch it in avid? and when pitched: still the pace of the 25fps shots would be wrong, no?

    3) i have a lot of troubles with my damned dvcam-deck. avid does not “know” this specific deck and says it is “generic”. well: sometimes it just does not work at all. sometimes it does. it is a bloody newest sony deck which also plays hdv and the hell everything. what’s wrong? i checked everything from cable to other decks (the same…).

    4) playouts: for edl i need 24fps? for soundstudio i need 25fps? how do i make a playout in 24fps (.mov and dvcam)? how do i make a playout in 25fps (.mov and dvcam)?

    5) other quesions: i already digitized a lot. now, for some reason, i might have to redigitize some tapes (same tapenames). i already generated a lot of subclips. first time i digitized clip by clip, now i want to digitize the whole tape: can i relink this and keep my subclips?

thank you so much for your help.
    dh.

If you are in a 24fps PAL project, the playback is 24fps unless you set your timeline/edit settings to be 25 (see Film/24p settings).

What you are really setting up is a 24fps/48kHz relationship when working double system in a PAL 24p project. The additional setting is whether sound is sync with tape (25fps) when capturing, or you are coming in double system via file import, etc.

If you are shooting both 24fps and 25fps… well you have different frame rates. I suspect the 25fps is intended to be played back at 24fps and intercut with the other footage. A sample rate and pitch correction would need to be done on that footage to make it 48kHs at 24fps to match the rest of your content.

In US, we can record 48.048kHz from 24fps shoot to go to 23.976 post slowing it down .1% but we do nothing to pitch correct. In 25 to 24, the 4% difference is much greater with a .7 semitone pitch difference. Recording audio at [48kHz+4.1%] for a 4% slow down in Avid is most likely not going to happen. I can’t recall audio recorders doing that range of recording. Those dailies would need to be processed before coming into Avid to match the other sources.
