Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy 23.98 to 59.94

    Hi all,

I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out a workflow for the following problem – laying off a 23.98 sequence from FCP through AJA FS1 to 59.94 1080i HDCam. It’s a 30 second spot but no matter what I do, I can’t get frame-accurate layback. The hardware has been checked by our techs and everything seems to be fine – my gut feeling is that either the Device Control preset and/or the Sequence preset need to be configured a specific way to make this work correctly.

The 23.98 sequence is in a FCP project that was delivered to us to output to HD Cam 59.94 1920 1080. The original sequence is 1920 x 1080 23.98 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) and the original media was also captured with those specs. The FCP is 6.0.5, with a Black Magic Multibridge Pro 2, QT ver 7.6.0, (1290), OS 10.5.6, 2×2.8GHz Quad, 10 GB Ram, running through an AJA FS1 to Sony HDW-1800 (HDCAM) deck. (We also have a SRW-5800 HDCAM SR deck and the same problem occurs with that).

I have a work around (crash recording to 59.94 – recapturing at 59.94 then laying off), but it’s a stop gap at best.

Thanks in advance for your brains! mmmmmmmmm brains!!!!!

    Hi Jon,
I don’t think any BM or AJA can do so.
We are not talking bout re-sizing or de-interlacing on the fly.
We are talking about creating in-between frames in RT.
    Too much.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response. The FS1 is a universal converter:

    https://www.aja.com/products/fs1/

It IS adding pulldown, the problem is that I can’t get it to be frame specific – i.e. I can’t get the layback to land at 01:00:00:00 (after bars/tone and the slate). And it’s not just an offset (which I could easily compensate for, it’s an inconsistent offset.

I think Dave has it…not sure if the FS1 is up to this task. I have done this more than a few times using the AJA Kona 3, either upconverting 720p 23.98 to 1080psf23.98, or to 1080i59.94 (really 29.97). There was a bit of a frame offset because of the cross convert, but once you figure out that number, you got it.

    I suggest calling AJA support.

    Hi Shane,

The FS1 should be up to the task – it’s specifically deigned to do this kind of conversion. The only problem is that I don’t get a consistent offset, so there’s no way to compensate for it. What sequence and device control presets are you using to make it work? Could the fact that my sequence is 1080 rather than 720 be adding to the murkiness?

Sorry I mixed this thread with another one asking how to go from p29,98 to p59;94.
    Going from p23,98 to i59,94, I don’t think shouldn’t be any problem.
If the card let you see the 23,98 footage in an NTSC monitor is because the card is adding the pulldown.

[Rafael Amador] “I don’t think any BM or AJA can do so. “

the AJA boards allow for addition of pulldown in hardware, most of the BMD products handle this is software.

the FS1 does not have the ability to add pulldown, it is not part of the current feature set- what ever you are feeding from should be able to handle the addition of pulldown.

    Hi Gary,
    You are right.
I thought he wanted to go “p24” to “p60”.
I don’t think there is any RT solution for that.
    Cheers,
    rafael
