    Hi,

First off I’d like to thank you all for your help over the years. This is my first post but I’ve been a long time user of the Cow. Your advice to others has got me out of some tough situations in the past!

So here’s what I need some help with…. We’ve just had an ad shot in LA at 23.98 on the RED, final delivery is for broadcast in PAL land. My workflow for Red footage would normally be transcode in RedRushes, offline FCP, render DPX from an EDL in Monkey Extract, DPX to VFX guys, grade and then play out to DigiBeta through a Kona.

I was thinking I would just conform all the offline footage in Cinema Tools and work at 25 from the start, due to the nature of what was shot a 4% speed change wouldn’t be a problem and it would save working with pulldowns. The problem with this is I can’t workout how my EDL would relate back to the original Red footage as the timecode would differ? As it’s an ad it has to be a set length so I couldn’t work 23.98 and conform to 25 at the end as it would run short. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best workflow for this.

Thanks in advance to anyone who wants to chime in on this.

    Best,
    Dave

Just work in 23.976, but keep in mind that your output will be shorter.

At the last stage, render out to a self contained file, use Cinematools to conform to 25 and play out / render to your needs.

Saves huge amounts of time and worries, and gives you the option to go to film or 29.97 as well.

    Thanks Bouke,

I did consider going that route and staying 23.976 until the final playout. The speed change won’t be an issue but the run time will be. As it’s for an ad I need to playout at an exact time (with 12 frames of silence and either end). So to make the conformed playout hit 30″ I would need the 23.976 timeline to be…………….. 00:31:07 ….. I think?! I’ll be more then happy to be proved wrong on that, maths has never been my thing.

Does anyone know of any kit that can do a frame-for-frame speed change on an R3D file? The only other option I can think of is transcoding all the rushes to DPX and changing the framerate on that, I’d really like to avoid doing that.

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Math is easy.
30 seconds * 25 frames per second makes 750 frames.
Set FCP to 23.976, switch master TC to frame counter and be done with it.
