I have a project just given to me that is nothing but stills set to music. I know, thrilling right. Do I want to stay progressive or Interlaced and at what frame rate? Deliverable will most likely be a 4:3 DVD that I would prefer to be progressive. So what sequence settings should I use? All Easy Setups are for SD interlaced except for the 23.98 progressive ones.

Should I create a ProRes sequence at 720×480, 29.97 and Field Dominance set to none. But would that make it a 30p sequence.

Its so much easier to deal with video cause I just use the codec it was shot in and hit yes when FCP ask to switch sequence settings. Sometimes something as simple as this can be confusing.

This to be played at a conference on either a projector or TV via DVD player.

Stay in Progressive, all DVD players will convert to interlace and add the pulldown when needed, but the pictures will benefit from being progressive on Flat screens and computers.

30p will be smoother since no pulldown will be added when interlacing, so this is more what look do you like as a whole. Personally I would go with 24p. IF you want to use 30p set your sequence Field order to NONE before you add any pics and it will be progressive.

Thanks Michael, but you mean 30p correct? And not 29.97, which is interlaced. But is it possible to have a 29.97 progressive sequence. By simply setting the Field Dominance to none?

Sorry, I always confused about this. Sometimes I have 29.97 material that I deinterlace with either MPEG Streamclip or Compressor to use in my edits for web material.

29.97 isn’t automatically interlaced, right? You actually have to set the field dominance. So I guess you could have a 29.97 progressive sequence?

Or, could you, or how would you convert a 30p sequence to interlaced, 60i. Does it simply duplicate each frame, one with odd and one with even interlacing.

Sorry if I’m confusing you. But I’m actually confusing myself.

Cool. So I can have a 29.97 progressive sequence. And if I later need that to be interlaced for any reason, its an easy conversion, right?

So to be clear, these sequence settings will work. I can use the Easy Set up for ProRes NTSC and make a few modifications to it.

    720×480 NTSC DV
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Field Dominance: None
