20 minute vid opens as 10 seconds?!
Hi there, I have sony vegas 9 and I have a home movie I recorded with my video camera that I want to edit in Vegas. I uploaded the files to my computer (VOBS) and tried opening one of the vob files (20 minutes long) into sony vegas and it shoes only a 10 second part of the 20 minutes. What happened to the rest?
When I open the file in a video player it shows all 20 minutes.
I also tried changing the extension to mpeg, and the same thing happened.
The thing is, while recording, there were different cuts (i’d record then tke a break and film again) and it seems that sony vegas is just opening a cut and not all the cuts combined. What can I do about this?

Try placing the cursor at the end of the clip on the timeline, then you click and drag the end of the clip (extending it to 20 seconds) and see, then lets know what happen.

How do you know that the vob file is 20-minutes?
I’ve never used a DVD camcorder, but is there a “finish” command that you may have missed?Steve Mann

Hi thanks for he reply, well when i filmed my home movie it was 20 minutes long, and when i play that file in vlc or other players it’s 20 minutes long. but the 20 minutes are clips of a few minutes ranging to a few seconds long combined to make the 20 minutes. It seems that vegas pro is just picking up one of those small clips and not the entire 20 mins worth. the vob file is all the clips combined into one 20 minute file.

Here’s the problem, if all the vob files add up to 20-minutes, ‘one’ of them will certainly be shorter than 20-minutes.
Have you tried importing the DVD from the file menu? (At least I think it’s in the file menu – I’ve never done that). This is the recommended way to import and edit vob files

What Steve is suggesting is go to File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc…. That is the proper way to import from a camera that records to DVD. You will not end up with VOB files at all but rather MPG files that can be edited normally. You should NOT be dragging VOB files into Vegas. Video OBjects files are a delivery format, not an editing format. You should be editing MPEG files created from the VOB’s.
