October 16, 2009 at 6:26 pmmissed you saying you had 2 LED, thought they were the LCD 30″ers…so geting back late, yes…2 video cards, but as shane said, not good for FCP…
so you could try that adapter…it’s only another 180 bucks after you shelled out 1800 for your displays that you can’t use both…(btw refurbed, the 24s are only 600 each)

How many rooms are you outfitting? 1 or 8? It’s a no brainer for me for 3 systems now and soon to be 8 to stay away from the Apple LEDs and go with someone else’s monitor. Even for one system I would not purchase those as I spend my money elsewhere. Again, my opinion. They are nice monitors, but for what we do here, money is spent elsewhere.
And we run all ATI cards here, the 4870 in the newest machine.

October 16, 2009 at 7:48 pmI don’t see any support for Apple products for that card.

These are the things that I have found to work well with my shooting habits and workflow. Always try things out for yourself and deduce the best workflow for you.

October 16, 2009 at 9:54 pmI think I’m going to try to get 1 card with dual head / 2 DisplayPorts. Then get a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter.
That will be the best option I think. I’d really like to use the LED’s…they are really really nice.
I just need to find a supported card that has that functionality.

October 16, 2009 at 10:02 pmBTW, here are some other cable options for you in case you need it. I have two Acer 24″ and got a mini display port adapter here that works great.

Only 1 edit bay…
Here’s what I’ve found with my research:
I need to get a card that supports DisplayPort. The Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 supports 2 out. However, it’s not specifically listed in the supported CS4 cards (although that line of cards is listed):
https://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/opengl.html
And I can’t find supported cards for Final Cut.
HOWEVER, I then need to adapt the Apple mini DisplayPort to standard DisplayPort. With this:
https://www.directdial.com/CAB-MDP-DPF.html
Anyone use this? Heard of it?
That’s what I found after just a few hours of research…
I’m very fortunate to now work for a company that allows me to get nice toys and work with the newest technology. Getting 2 LED monitors wasn’t really a big deal when I asked for them when I started. Unfortunately, I hadn’t worked with Macs before and had the misunderstanding of them to be widely compatible with other mac products…which I’ve quickly found out is not the case at all. I have a BRAND NEW MacPro…and BRAND NEW LED monitors. The MacPro says it supports the monitors…but there is NO reference to the issue of running dual monitor (which ALOT of people use today).
Anyway, I appreciate all the help…I’d really like to find an updated listing of video cards supported by FCS7. If anyone has that link…please send along.
Thanks

“The specs are listed on the Apple website. Almost all of the Mac Pro supported cards also support Studio 3. The issue is you can’t run two cards at the same time.

October 17, 2009 at 11:04 amJason, I wouldn’t expect any problems with the quadro 3800 in this situation for After Effects.

Two third party adapters exist that allow the apple LED display to be connected to a standard DVI output:
https://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8913
https://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html
I agree with you, though. It’s obnoxious that Apple itself didn’t release an adapter of its own for the new displays, and it’s obnoxious that it costs at least $150 to gain that functionality.
The other bit of nastiness is that the cord on the new LED displays is only three feet long, and I’m unaware of any Mini DisplayPort extension cables being available at this time. Think about it: three feet. How close is your Mac Pro tower to your display? Mine’s in a rack right next to my editing desk and I couldn’t get by with anything less than six feet long. At least with a DVI adapter, you can use a DVI extension cable to get the extra length.
Apple sometimes makes some monumentally stupid design choices.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you can’t buy just any graphics card and drop it into a Mac Pro and have it work properly. The Mac Pro requires graphics cards with EFI support and a Mac boot ROM in order to work in OS X. This is a very short list of cards, none of which have dual DisplayPort outputs.
Your only option at this time is to use a Mac-compatible card in conjunction with a DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter from either Gefen or Altona. The best performing card for Final Cut Studio is currently the ATI Radeon HD 4870. There’s no need to spend more for an nVidia Quadro card, as Apple’s drivers are better optimized for the ATI card. The card has one DVI connector and one Mini DisplayPort connector, which means you’ll need a third-party adapter in order to use two LED displays with the card.
Good luck.
