    Hey Guys,

I’m running a new MacPro…I have two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 cards and 2 LED Cinema displays.

I tried to put in a eSata card today…but I don’t have any slots left with 2 video cards/raid card/Matrox card.

I pulled out one video card to run both monitors off of one card, but there is only ONE DisplayPort and ONE DVI…so the LED display couldn’t connect via the DisplayPort…so I have mismatching LED and LCD monitors for the interim.

What are you guys using…my slots inside my macpro have:

    RAID Card
Graphics (NVIDIA GeForce GT 120) Card
    Matrox Card (MXO2)
    eSATA Card

Is there a better configuration? What are you guys doing to run dual displays?

Get an adapter for the monitor so it will connect to the card. Really, you should only be running ONE video card if you have two monitors. YOu can find an adapter at the Apple store for $20.

yes, get the adapter from Apple, works perfectly. only reason you would need to run 2 video cards, is if you are running 2 of the 24″ LED Apple Displays…they only work off the mini display port….there are no adapters that work…but for you….mini display to DVI, you’re golden…

how do you like your Cinema display….ours looks like hell next to the 24″ LED display….se la vie

Wait, there is NO ADAPTER for the new Apple LED displays? So to have two you MUST have two video cards? That’s obnoxious.

    OK…

I HAVE 2 LED display’s…both work ONLY with the DisplayPort adapter. When I put a new card in my MacPro, I had to REMOVE one card…the card has 2 outputs…one DisplayPort, one DVI.

There is no *apple* product to make a male-DVI connection to a female-DisplayPort.

However, I did find this link:

    https://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html

Seems to do what I need.

I DON’T like mixing the two…the LED’s are SO MUCH better than the LCD’s…I’ve spoiled myself to the point of *whatever it takes* to run dual LED displays.

I’m very curious though…will the MacPro benefit from having 2 video cards? Or is it only a connection issue? I could remove my RAID card…and just use my eSATA 8TB raid…and then add back in my additional video card.

    What are your thoughts?

Two video display cards present problems with FCS. Any FXPlug plugins, that harness the power of the graphics cards, won’t work properly. Applications that also harness the power of display cards, Motion and Color, won’t work properly. So two cards presents a problem.

Why doesn’t someone make a card with TWO of these display connectors? or make an adapter? This is just farking stupid.

    So, what are you using?

Just not working with the LED monitors?

Using a single video card with dual DVI heads? Which one? Have you seen that adapter that I linked you to?

If I could have any pick of a dual head video card (money not the deciding factor) which should I choose for mostly AE and FCP work…a little motion…working mostly in HD? Corporate in-house production.

[Jason Brown] “So, what are you using?”

At home…X1900XT graphics card and two Dell 2405 monitors via DVI.
At work…ATI3870 graphics card and two Acer V223W 22″ monitors via DVI.

[Jason Brown] “If I could have any pick of a dual head video card (money not the deciding factor) which should I choose for mostly AE and FCP work…a little motion…working mostly in HD?”

Well, since you have the LED monitors with that special, RARE monitor connection, then you are limited to graphics cards with that connection. I don’t have the time to research the web on what card to get. What I would do is NOT have the LED monitors with that special rare connection. I buy less expensive good monitors with STANDARD connections and graphics cards that also sport that STANDARD connection. Doesn’t matter if i am working with HD or SD…I don’t use my monitor to critically judge anything…for that I have a capture card and external HD monitor. The computer monitors are just for me to see what I am doing. But they have to be decent at least, not cheap off-brand. Acer is good, I love DELL…

But now that you have the monitors that you have…my advice seems moot. maybe someone who also uses those monitors can pitch in here.

Dell LCD displays here. Running both off single graphics cards. Mini DVI to DVI adapter for one, regular DVI for the other.

As others have mentioned, dual graphics cards presents problems for Studio, especially Color which I believe will not operate with two graphics cards in the machine. We only run one graphics card with dual displays on all our systems and we do not run any Apple LED displays. Too expensive in my opinion.

I’m sitting here looking @ LED and LCD sitting next to each other…and it’s a no brainer. The LED are so much more VIBRANT…clear…it really is amazing. It’s brighter too…I can’t match the brightness of each of them…the dimmest my LED gets is brighter than the LCD. I didn’t think they were that much different than what I used to have, but side by side…wow.

Shane – I’m not using them for any kind of preview…just to work. I have a 17″ broadcast HD monitor for viewing playback.

Here’s what my research brought up…getting a dual head card that supports the DisplayPort connection.

    ATI FirePro V5700

Have either of you had experience with this card? Do ATI’s work well with Mac’s and Final Cut? I’ve only seen people with Nvidia cards.

Never heard of it. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. I just don’t know about it.

[Jason Brown] “Do ATI’s work well with Mac’s and Final Cut?”

COLOR prefers ATI. And as I said, I use the ATI 3870 at work, and the ATI x1900XT at home…
