  • 2 queries- avi export & offline to online upgradation

    Hi,
I have an edited time-line in FCP 5.1.4 which is of 30 min. I am trying to export it from ‘using quicktime conversion’ as an AVI with DV-PAL codec best quality. But It’s getting exported only of 6 mins. I have tried converting as mov it worked.
My 2nd query is about offline to online upgradation. I have 3 mini DVs of an event(3 cam setup). I have captured it through firewire with offlineRT photo JPEG. edited it. & as per FCP manual, made it offline through media manager, tried to batch capture, but it says ‘timecode error:specified timecode does not match. you may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for pre/post roll operation.
The fact is I haven’t change the timecode/settings at all.

    Pls help. thanx in advance.

    thanx
    shreyas.

    Hi Shreyas,
Off-lining DV doesn’t makes much sense today.

[shreyas kulkarni] ” ‘timecode error:specified timecode does not match. you may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for pre/post roll operation. “
That means that you can not set the capture IN point right in the beginning of the tape. You need to let at least 5 or 6 seconds so the desk can make the pre-roll.
The same counts for the end of the tape. Don’t set the last oUT point right in the end of the tape.
    Let few seconds tail.

But I haven’t captured by logging the tapes. I captured whole tapes. I did that as an experiment as I am planning that(offline to online) for Beta.

What Rafael said. You captured too close to the beginning of the tape to be able to recapture the material with device control. You might be able to open the log and capture window. Drag the file into the capture window. Trim the start timecode and then log the clip to create a new start time with sufficient pre-roll. You can then recapture this material and reconnect to this file rather than the original file.

    All the best,

    Tom

Thanx tom. It worked. That means every time I capture whole tape I start with some pre-roll. right ?
& what about my 1st query ? why it is not converting it to AVI ? it’s done with mov, but I am just curious to know. 🙂 Thanx a ton again tom & Rafael.

AVI is a obsolete PC format. Most production applications, and all Mac applications, I think, are based on QuickTime.

    Ok.
I have one more query regarding offline to online up-gradation. Now I can capture the tape with some pre-roll. But FCP is not able to differentiate between the tapes though have made the sequence clips independent. The tape I insert in the recorder, FCP is capturing with that tape’s time-code only.
    Please help. Thanx in advance.

    thanx
    shreyas.
