I saw Shane mention at one point about DVCPRO HD being 2 frames off when capturing Varicam at 23.976. I’m currently working on a program where our primary format is DVCPRO HD 720p 23.976. We upres to ProRes (HQ) for online, but I’ve noticed that I typically have to slip the video tracks 2 frames for them to be in proper sync. Then I checked into the Device Control parameters, and noticed something. The Device Control preset for Panasonic 59.94 has a capture offset of -2.500 frames and the Panasonic 59.94 Varicam preset has a capture offset of 0.

I am currently using the Panasonic 59.94 Varicam device control preset, and wanted to check if anybody else has had this two frame issue and rectified it by switching their device control preset over to Panasonic 59.94 as opposed to Panasonic 59.94 Varicam.

Just to give you the lowdown on my system specs, I’m using a Mac Pro 2,1 Quad 3.0 Ghz system with 8 GB Ram, and a Kona 3. We’re capturing to an 8 way SATA Raid, with a 6TB Fibre Channel San.

Any idea on which model varicam it was shot on? The later version (H) has a correction for this.

If not, you will have to slip the audio and video.

Unfortunately I don’t know what model of Varicam it is but that sounds like the 24p offset correction they made with the DVX100A from the original DVX100, so that makes sense. Thanks!

It’s been a while since I’ve looked at it, but I seem to remember it was buried in the record/VTR menus somewhere.

Found it for your future use:

    Vtr Main Menu > Mic/Audio > A/V Synchro > On

Remember, this is only available on the H model. If you have multiple varicams there, make sure they are all H and that they all account for this. If you are using a mix of H and non H, then leave the H alone (or turn it off) and fix it in post.
