I’m new to the SAN thing and so wondered if you had some ideas that could help me with a broadcast project I’m doing shortly.

The show will produce 4 x 1 hour shows and will be cut on 2 Suites to meet deadlines. The show is being shot on DVCam but will have some SD DigiBeta source elements – Title Sequences. and the odd interview – so I’m planning to finish the project Uncompressed.

Both Suites will need access to all the material but online and uncompressed elements need only be to be dealt with in one suite (Edit 1)

I think I’m going to need something like 6TB of storage but would like some suggestions on how to set things up for an efficient and stable edit. The show has little graphics so will only require a bit of grading and speed effects for the finished piece.

I’d like to find a cost effective way of managing the digitised material without cutting corners and risking losing the media or hindering the edit process.

    Thanks for your help

Given your intended plans, and your desire to keep things at a cost efficient level for budget we would recommend that you use a shared storage enviroment between the suites connected by a Fibre Channel 2Gb(FC)SAN. Each system in each suite would connect to the storage via a dual ported host bus adapter (HBA). Each port from a suite would connect to one of the two controllers on an ADTX RAID. The ADTX – LH RAID has 15 500GB drives and Dual/Redundant Fiber Channel 2 controllers. The unit will support up to 2 Streams of HD1080i uncompressed. Along with this we would recommend MetaSAN for managing the digitised material without cutting corners and risking losing the media or hindering the edit process by making sure one user doesn’t overwrite another. We can go over things in more detail if you want to call. I’m really not sure that this will fit your budget without knowing numbers.
