1st time laying of to dvcpro HD

I just did this yesterday.

Change DECK CONTROL to AJA KONA LH: 59.94 Panasonic VTR

Plug in RS-422 deck control to the deck. HD SDI into the deck. If needed, connect the Y out, or composite, to the REF IN on the deck. Make sure that you have HD SDI selected as the VIDEO and AUDIO input on the front of the deck (I love this deck). Then Video Playback set to AJA KONA 720p59.94 8-bit (1280×720).

In the SYSTEM SETTINGS, Playback Control tab, have the frame offset to 0. Pulldown pattern 2:3:2:3. Make sure everything is rendered.

Black the tape with the EDit To Tape window (the film strip looking thing at the top center)…then when yo are ready to lay off, type in the inpoint in the ETT window. make sure you have the same spot marked IN on the timeline. Then drag the sequence to the ASSEMBLE EDIT overlay on the ETT window and click OK.

Pretty slick.

Shane I need you expert advice. So this morning i ran some test using the parameters that you told me I should use, yes they work great, the computer , card, and deck seem to be talking to each other seamlessly. But there is a a BUT.

first I layed off to the dvcpro tape from the SATA raid and it would about the edit to tape, so I closed all my non necessary open sequences, turned off unlimited real time, closed any other programs and still it would give me videos hits, or the clasic gettting stuck on one frame and recording it for like 3 seconds before aborting the edit to tape.

Second I exported a full rez quicktime movie here are the specs
DVCPRO HD 729p60, 960 x 720, fps 29.97, TRT 18 minutes, 8.48 GB size.
I localized the movie on the second internal HD, brought that movie into a new FCP project
opened a new sequence with a sequence preset of DVCPRO HD 720P30. In this case when editing to tape it would run fine trough the outputting process did not quit, but I did get so see the audio dropping out on the deck, and video hits on the image.

I also noticed that the TC on the deck, once I stopped it, was a full 4 frames behind the TC in the sequence that would match that edit? I know that off setting happens but is this really common?

I also realized that the power PC G5 has only two gigs of ram, there are lots of electronics running in this room, and i was wondering if that lack of poower and RAM had to do with this un sucessful attempt to lay off to tape out DVCPRO HD sequence.

I will keep on running test and see if something happens.
Guidance? please.

I am no expert on this, as I have output a total of 3 times to that deck…in fact, ouputting right now. But I am using a 720p23.98 sequence and outputting to tape at 59.94. I am not seeing the same issues as you.

perhaps Walter Biscardi, who does this more regularly, would have more insight.

Unfortunately no. Sync is one place where that deck absolutely has not had an issue here. We’ve laid off both Firewire and HD-SDI from our Kona system with zero issues.

RAM has nothing to do with sync. Make sure your playback offset is set to 0 before mastering because 4 frames is default and you said your TC is 4 frames off.

Question
were you watching the output via the deck or on the tape after capture when you see the problems ? you were using the Kona card for layoff and NOT FW?

you do realize that you are working in a NON Drop Timebase?

this should have been enough for a self contained video file.
