16mm telecine motion-blur
Hi there,
I’ve stumbled upon a quite aggravating technical issue with Final Cut Pro 7. I shot some footage on 16mm and then I got the telecined negative from the lab on a Mini DV tape.
I Log and Capture the footage in DV PAL 48Hz and then invert it into positive. Everything looks brilliant until I export it as a Quick Time file. I tried all kinds of settings when exporting it and the result is always one. The clip when played in Quick Time has some sort of motion blur. Strangely when I view the file with ‘Quick Preview’ it all looks fine. I tried converting to Mpeg and burning on a DVD – there is again that motion blur. I really don’t know what to do. The telecine is 25fps (I tried conforming to 24 but to no avail).
I’ll be immensely grateful if somebody can give me a hint how to fix that. Thanks -

Try doing the invert in Color instead.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll try tomorrow. However, I think it won’t solve the problem cause even if I export the negative as quick time, the motion blur is still there.

When you view it at 100% size in your Canvas, do you see the blur? If so, it’s in actual video file… and there’s nada you can do other than maybe try a re transfer. Looking at the video externally would tell the tail as well. but the only way to “sort of” judge quality in FCP is to look at it with the canvas sized at 100%.

DV is going to be interlaced, which shouldn’t be a problem, but if there’s a field dominance error then the process might go wrong when you export a progressive file – it’s possible that each frame is being made from a field 1 of one frame and a field 2 of another (either the previous or the next). Have you tried the field shift filter to see if that makes any difference?

When I play it in Final Cut, there is no motion blur even at 100% Canvas Size.

I haven’t tried and even thought of field shift. I will try doing that when I go in the Edit Suites on Monday. Thanks a lot for the advice!
