when you bring a 16:9 (NTSC SD) comp into a 4:3 (NTSC SD) comp, what’s the proper method of scaling the nested 16:9 comp so that it doesn’t look distorted in the 4:3 comp?

if your comps are set with the correct pixel aspect ratios (1.2 for widescreen and 0.9 for sd) then you should not need to make adjustments, ae should handle the conversion automatically. ae will crop your widescreen comp, but it should correct the pixel aspeet ratio diference.

if you wanted the widescreen to look letter boxed in the 4×3 comp, then choose layer>transorm>fit to comp width.

as long as things are set up right in ae (be it comp settings, interpret footage, etc.), ae seems to handle all the variations, from frame rate to pixel aspect, quite well.
