I’ve been shooting in HD (1440×1080 – 16:9) for almost a year now but still delivering to my local cable company in 720×480 – 4:3 so yes, Vegas can definitely do it.
I now give them a file on a hard drive so it’s a lot less work for both of us.
No more Print to tape for me and no more 2 hr. transfers for them 🙂
They have a strange playback server and the only thing I can give them that will work is an MXF file.
AVI is supposed to work but we’ve never been able to figure out how, even with the manufacturer working with us on it.
They edit with FCP and, while short (30 min. or less) MOV files upload just fine, anything longer refuses to load.
Score another one for Vegas!!
If you want your product to be letterboxed (i.e. top and bottom cut off), set your project to “NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970 fps)”, import it and drop it on the timeline.
If you want it to be full frame, you’ll have to set each event to the project settings by dropping it on the timeline, opening the Pan/Crop window, right-clicking and selecting “Match Output Aspect”.
I’m sure there’s a script out there to automate this for you.
Either way, you’ll have a lot of flexibility for zooming in and/or cropping the shot to fit the 4:3 frame.
