I have a 30 second 16.9 HD clip that I need to center on a 4.3 background, since it’s HD I’m not sure what settings to use in my project set-up that is both 4.3 and HDV. Is this even possible?

I tried centering it in a SD 4.3 but it looks like crap due to the shrinking and pixel shape I would guess, I want to maintain the HD quality but centered on the 4.3 background, I guess this would be considered letterbox.

    Any Ideas???

    Thank much.

You will lose resolution since there is no such thing as HD 4:3.

You’ll have to create a standard DV project, import the file, and scale down (both horizontal and vertical linked) until the top lines up to the frame. Make sure scale to frame size is turned off in the preferences before importing.

A better solution would be editing in HD, then exporting and down-scaling in After Effects as the quality there is superior.

    Yeah,

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on some magical 4.3 HD option that I didn’t know about since HD is pretty new to me.

The spot is actually already in After Effects. I had already done what you suggested but I had used the HD clip in a SD 4.3 and scaled down but it didn’t look good. So now I’ll re render out as an SD wide and center it in the 4.3:)

    Thanks for your input Vince!
