16:9 footage squeezed to 4:3 – how to unsqueeze?
Hello,
I received some DVDs this week with video footage that was originally shot in 16:9 but was outputted as 4:3 footage (everyone looks tall and skinny). Does FCP allow me to “unsqueeze” this footage so that it returns to it’s original aspect ratio? Or does anyone else know a Mac-friendly software program that can reset the aspect ratio for me?

To un-squeeze, you need to stretch. You will find this under distort in the motion tab.
I believe the damage has been done by creating the DVD.

“Unless I’m misinterpreting something here, NO damage has been done at all. What Leigh has got is perfectly standard anamorphic video, and he’ll damage it by stretching it.
Leigh, all you need to do is change your sequence settings to 16:9 anamorphic (go to Sequence>Settings, and tick the checkbox). Then you should be seeing your footage correctly in widescreen.

Further to my previous post, remember that widescreen footage in the SD domain is actually 4:3 with a different pixel aspect ratio. All the display device does is stretch the 720×576 (or 720×480) image out to fill the 16:9 frame.
