Please, please help! I am using a panasonic DVX100b and capturing 720/30fps on a 16gb SD card. Up until now I have had ZERO issues with getting the footage into FCP 7 using log and transfer – it seems like all of a sudden.. NONE of my macs are able to read the cards and I get the red exclamation point.
I’m a television production teacher so the cards get used A LOT but we’ve made it a practice to reformat the cards after every use to get rid of the “phantom” files. Am I doing something wrong?
We just filmed a very important game for the high school and the coaches want their DVD pronto! If I convert the files and reinvest them into FCP my sound is all off and the files become HUGE.
    I’m really at a loss!
As always – I know just enough info to be dangerous… but not enough to trouble shoot!

Are you always using the same card reader?
Had a similar problem a week ago when given Sandisk SD 16Gb 30mbs card used in a Sony (SR12) ?
My regular multi card reader wouldn’t even acknowledge it, but it would recognise other SD cards and a 32Gb CF card.
Took the computer and the card to a store and tried a fairly expensive card reader, which asked me to reformat the card (no way). Tried a cheap SD UB 2.0 (no cable it look more like memory stick) and presto files showed up and transfered fine.
So not all SD card readers are readers of all SD cards.

    [Karin McKemey] ” I am using a panasonic DVX100b and capturing 720/30fps on a 16gb SD card”

And you are a teacher. That is very dangerous!!! Not good for the students learning. DVX100 only shoots DV to DV tape. I’ll take a wild guess and say the camera was an HMC-150. That is very important information to know.

I am going to point you to the tapeless workflow for Final Cut 7. Study it. If followed correctly, you will not have any issues.

you don’t have to be mean – sorry, the camera was not in front of me – we use both tape and sd cameras. I appreciate the tutorial and will dissect it but I still don’t understand the “why”- Why would everything work fine and not have a problem since we started using the new cameras in November and then all of a sudden, we get the red exclamation point. Is it the cards or final cut settings or both? I have 90 students and 26 computers and they are dumping footage on external hard drives, chopping it up and exporting it. We have very little footage we actually need to keep for posterity.
I am a “teacher” but I was originally a news producer – I have very little knowledge of the technical aspect of video production and am very honest with my kids. I will do everything I can to find out information for them and I do the best I can with very little money and resources. I come to this forum to learn and pass it on to my kids in hopes it sparks something that will propel them to the next level where they will be surrounded with people like you who are obviously a lot more knowledgeable. If that makes me “dangerous”- I apologize, but my heart is in the right place.

Karin, You need to give us more information so we can help you.

You say none of your Macs can read the card which would mean its not likely to be something you are doing wrong now. I asked if you were always using the same card reader. Try another card reader. Are the pins in the card reader damaged?

Because if as you say all your Mac computers give the same result it’s likely to be the card reader or the card or the way vision was recorded on the card.

Try putting the card in the camera and replaying it. If it plays you know you have pictures recorded.

Has someone accidently done something to the card by reformatting incorrectly? see if another type of computer will read the card.
