  • 16 audio channels on batch capture?

    Mac Pro
    FCP studio 6
Blackmagic HD Pro card ? Digi SDI

Trying to batch capture straightforward video + 2ch stereo audio from my Digi deck over SDI (just as I have innumerable times before). Batch Capture has now decided to capture 16channels of audio per clip instead of just 2, making editing v difficult.
It hasn’t done this before – any similar experiences/ideas? Am about to trash the prefs to see if that helps.
Upon searching I noticed someone else had this problem – but had no responses so I guess it’s uncommon.
    Any ideas?

    Very common mistake…

FCP defaults to 16 channels of audio on most of the codecs, except DV which only has two channels. You have to select the number of channels you want in the Log & Capture window – Clip Settings tab – scroll down to audio and select your two channels you want.

When you delete the prefs, FCP will revert to this and most of the time when FCP crashes, it reverts to this also.

Thanks for this Wayne. Sorted it out now. The Batch Capture Clip Settings window had the option to select the number of channels grayed out, so couldn’t adjust that. But I found that I could limit the number of channels in Capture Preset in Audio/Video settings.
The problem was that even after I’d done that, the original clip files ‘remembered’ that they were to capture as 16ch (despite the original media files being made offline and deleted), and so they had to be changed via Clip Settings in the bin.
Just read this and even I’m baffled – but at least it’s working now! Thanks again.

Also if you have clips already captured with superfluous audio you can open the clip in quicktime. Hit command-J, highlight the unwanted audio hit delete then save the clip. FCP will say the clip(s) have gone offline. Reconnect them which FCP will say the clips don’t match the original just continue and there you go no more extra audio.
