15″mac book pro + DVCPRO HD + media drive?
Dear All,
I’m putting together a system for working at DVCPRO HD resolution offsite and need a little advice on choosing a media drive.
Currently we have muliple users accessing an xraid in the office. We capture 1080i 59.94 (HDCAM) through a Kona card to DVCPRO HD resolution for the offline, and redigitize and finish at 10bit.
Originally I was planning to do a recompress to offlineRT HD resolution for my laptop, and use media manager to create DVCPRO HD versions to pass over the internet to my collaborators. However, I’m finding that animations and other quicktime assets at various pixel resolutions, need to be rescaled when moving between projects at different resolutions.
Also I’ve found that it is necessary to change the property of the pixel aspect ratio for every clip made at offline RT HD resolution form HD1280 x 1080 to square after using the media manager otherwise they display improperly in the timeline, and a scaler is applied that propagates when and make “offline” DVCPRO HD version of the project is created.
For these and other reasons we have decided that I will stay at DVCPRO HD resolution. Now I am looking for a cheap Media Drive solution. I estimate a need for 450 – 500 GB of drive space so I’m thinking that I need a minimum of a 750GB drive.
With a 15″ mac book pro I have a firewire 400 connection and the option of getting an express 32 esata card. I figure I also need to decide between a single drive or a 2 drive RAID 0 configuration.
In terms of RT effects will the bottleneck be at the processor in my laptop, or the throughput of my media drive?
I need a system that deosn’t drop frames for normal playback. I will be flying back and forth with this media drive every month – so that is a consideration also. Price is also definitley a consideration. What do people recommend?
best,
Jason
