15fps sequence
hello all. I’m driving myself crazy trying to solve this, and i believe i’ve read the solution some time ago on the forums as a tip or trick, but can’t find anything.
My situation. I have footage captured on a Canon still camera (in movie mode). I’d like to be able to edit in it’s native format to retain the qualities (shortcomings :)) the camera and format have. It’s 640*480 (easy enough) at 15fps, easy…. Wait a second. No matter what i do I can’t seem to find a way to create setting for a 15fps sequence. I read (i believe) somewhere that one could create a sequence based on a clip’s settings, but i am unsure of how this was accomplished. really i think it was just 2 or 3 steps. well, 2 or 3 hours later i’m still trying.
the project: there’s no need to go to anything more than 15fps as it will only end up on the web at 15fps. And I don’t want to deal with all the side effects of frame rate conversion to and from.
my setup: 10.4.6, FCP 5.0.4, QT 7.1.1
Any help or leads would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks Shane. that was exactly what i was looking for. unfortunately I am getting an error when i click on the sequence. “codec not found. you may be using a compression type without corresponding hardware card.” follow by an “out of memory” error. When i “apple”+0 the sequence it tells me “Video compressor DV/NTSC was not found. Please check that the hardware is present and enabled for this compressor. Setting the video compressor to 3ivx D4 4.5.1”
Opening the sequence setting i see that the quicktime video settings are now set to compressor: 3ivx D4 4.5.1
The quicktie info on the movie file is:
Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions
8-bit Unsigned Integer, Mono, 11.024 kHzAny ideas? I need to search a little on OpenDML Jpeg i think.

Yeah…I have never heard of that compression type. You need that codec in your QT folder..but…does it play in QT?
This trick only works if you have the codec the files were made with.

i do this with my canon G3 camera and the .avi files it makes.
final cut pro will not create 15fps sequences (t’would be nice if it did). use quicktime pro and export a conversion to something fcp can use with no effort. i usually convert these to 75% photojpeg files at 30fps. you also need to convert the audio and i use 48k.
create a custom sequence setting with fcp for the file dimensions and video compressor and edit away. easy. you can also use compressor to accomplish the same conversion.

it plays in quicktime and in the viewer. Really in the end it’s an .avi file. From QT i’m going to export movie to QT movie H.264 at 15fps and then edit in the sequence with the multiclip sequence trick. (thank you so much for that by the way). I’m losing a little in the conversion (less contrast), but i’m sure i’ll end up tricking it all out in the end anyway, at least i don’t hav to go from 15 to 30, and back to 15!

that was basically the work flow i was using. I found compressor to have very poor results. not to mention an extremely long time to convert. I would suggest the approach on Shane’s link, along with a simple QT conversion “movie to quicktime movie” ( i used H.264) but maintain the current fps. I am able to work on a 15fps timeline. And overall I’ll be saving a lot of time. (aside from the 4 hours today of trying sort it all out).
