I run a college broadcasting program and made the maverick decision to go with Vegas as a good basic teaching software. All were bought less than 2 yrs. ago. My students are now buying new Vegas 10, because 9 is no longer available, and their projects won’t play on my computers. $5,000 worth of software down the toilet, and immense hassles and embarrassment. Sony’s reaction was too bad. It’s bad enough that I teach hundreds of people Vegas and they won’t even give me a decent break on the software. I guess they’re not interested in expanding their user base. Instead of the $5,000 upgrade, I’m buying all new seats of Adobe Premiere, because Premiere is backward compatible– at least to a certain extent. Vegas is the last Sony Software I’ll buy. And I won’t recommend it to any other institution. Wish Sony could figure out a way to make too-frequent full upgrades work for educational institutions who could be their biggest promoter. Vegas will likely stay a niche software that will probably be abandoned soon. The current upgrade was not worth it- and really shafted their academic training base. Hasta la vista, Sony.

Sorry to hear that! I agree Vegas 10 is a lame upgrade, reminds me of Microsoft model business scheme. Sony is not too bright….

I just found out why my EX-1 wasn’t so good after I send it in for repairs…They send me someone else’s camcorder!!! Unfortunately, the serial number is cleverly hidden from users, so when attempting to fix back focus, from this cammy, I realized, this ain’t mine!!!

Oh well, at least it works, I guess….

I guess good ethical behavior is too much to ask for from large corporations…

Vegas has never been backwards compatible. Is there a reason that their V10 work has to be compatible with all 12 seats? It may be too late now to take advantage of the $139 per seat upgrade to 10, but that’s the obvious choice.

Would be better if they kept selling 9 to institutions that had made that investment. Don’t know if their offer applied to academic site licenses. They didn’t say. When ProTools came out with 9, did they stop selling M-powered? No. They actually care about people learning their software. People told me it was dumb to put Vegas in an academic lab. Yep.
