    Hello friends,

I just built a 12-core with my OS on a 120GB SSD in the 2nd optical bay and then a x4 2tb RAID 0 setup (8TB total) with an external HD running Carbon Copy Cloner as a backup system for the 8tb RAID 0.

My question is about whether or not my media, projects files, FCS Scratch location, etc can all live on my RAID 0 or if I should have an extra internal drive reserved just for scratch or project files? My SSD is only 120GB and has my OS / apps on it so i obviously don’t want to use that for anything else – i kinda wish I got a larger SSD now!

Any suggestions for optimal setup on this type of system? I still have the 1TB drive that came with my 12-core so maybe i could put that somewhere?

any help or advice would be great!
    cheers
    sean

    Hi Sean,

What you’re doing sounds absolutely fine as long as you maintain your backup routine.

Personally I keep things like project files, client documents, scripts, logos, compressed exports etc on a separate volume (internal RAID 1) and have all of my actual media (animations, video files, voice over, music etc) on an external RAID 5.
As far as I’m aware there’s no technical advantage to this, I do it simply for organisation.

I also back up all project media to LTO-3 tapes and keep master files of finished programmes on a different LTO-3 tape which I call ‘Archive’.

Hope that answers your question. Perhaps someone can confirm whether keeping project files on separate volumes to media files is good, bad or irrelevant.

    All the best,
    Alex
