12-core w/ FCS, Avid MC5, CS5, C4D on same system?
Posted by Sean Kapleton on December 7, 2010 at 7:26 pmHello
I just want to make sure it is ok to all of these applications installed on the same system or if anyone knows of issues? I have Blackmagic 3d & HDlink3d w/ dreamcolor for monitoring. Just want to make sure Avid & FCP are ok on the same system.
thanks

Yup. I have Avid MC5 and FCP 7 on the same boot partition. And I am monitoring with the MXO2 Mini, which works for both. Your Decklink solution will only work for FCP, not Avid…FYI.

December 7, 2010 at 7:50 pmHey Shane thanks for the response!
wow no way BMD doesn’t work with Avid?! i actually only want to install it on my home system to re-familiarize myself with MC5 as I have not used Avid in a few years and want to be able to take on more of that work as well. If I am just doing tutorials and dont need to monitor on my calibrated would that be possible? so i guess its not a big deal that it cant go out to my Dreamcolor but STILL!! what products work AJA, Kona & Matrox only?!
I posted this question on the avid forum as well and got some interesting responses about it effecting 64 bit apps since its only 32bit – any thoughts on that?
cheers

December 7, 2010 at 8:07 pmFor basic editing you don’t need the capture card. Only for monitoring. And thus far the Matrox MXO2 Mini is the ONLY non-Avid hardware that allows monitoring from Avid Media Composer. And AJA and Kona are the same thing.
As for 32 bit vs 64, neither FCP nor Avid are 64 bit. Only CS5 is. How this affects things, I haven idea.

December 7, 2010 at 8:08 pmI’d keep Avid and FCP on separate boot drive and restart to the one you need.
Avid has way more strict rules on OS/QT configs, while FCP is less stringent.

December 8, 2010 at 3:41 pmThere should be no problem. I have had all three on my Mac laptop without issue. The BMD card will work with CS5 or Apple where the MXO2 should in theory work with all three.
