10k RPM System Drive
My 250gb OS X system drive and my 500gb have finally come dangerously close to full, and I’m currently looking into upgrading my internal storage on my Mac Pro. I’m currently looking at a 300GB 10,000rpm HDD for my system in an attempt to speed OS X and my Pro Apps, in terms of both launching and rendering. I’m wondering if anyone has gone through such an upgrade before, and if the speed increase justifies pulling the trigger on a $200 drive versus a $80 one.

The speed of the system drive isn’t really going to matter. A 5400 RPM drive is fast enough to run the OS and Apps. The system drive has Zero to do with rendering, that’s all processors. Having very full media drives will slow FCP to a crawl.
In terms of launching the apps, if you have any media at all on your System Drive, that’s a huge no-no and will majorly slow down your system. Put in a 500GB or 1TB System Drive so you have plenty of room for the OS and Apps and that will be fine.
Also, load up the RAM to 8 or 16GB, that speeds up the apps.
I personally prefer external storage for media because it’s so easy to just add on more storage as you need it.
