I’m looking for a good, clean way to create a 1080 project in Progressive format, knowing there’s a chance it may need to be converted to an interlaced format upon picture lock. Workflow is all file based, no layoff to tape. And using the BMD codecs for my Decklink Studio 2 and FSI for monitoring. Are those codecs(BMD uncomp 1080p29.97) P or PsF?

So my question is, should I create a project file at 1080p29.97 and if it does need to be converted to an Interlaced format for delivery, do so on output to 59.94i or via AE. Will this convert cleanly and add in the necessary cadence for interlacing?

Or build the project at 1080p23.98, output master, and use Compressor or AE to do standards conversion and add in pulldown?

Which would be better. I’m thinking the former, especially if some of the footage is already 29.97p from our Canon 7D. Just want to make sure that conversion will be clean and as close to flawless as possible. I’d rather not work with 29.97p footage on a 23.98 project.

2nd question, if I use 1080p29.97, is that P or PsF? From what I understand, PsF will convert more cleanly to an Interlaced format rather than true progressive. I guess the bigger question is does the Canon 7D shoot true P or is it PsF and how is this set in Premiere?

    Is this for broadcast?

No. But not knowing the delivery specs completely, it may need to be interlaced for the clients media playback system. Waiting on specs, but need to get started on the edit. This is will mostly be GFX work, but has sections of video.

I would keep it all in a 1080p sequence. Psf is designed to transport a p signal on an i tape. Do your edit if you need to deliver an i file export the sequence as i. The Canon shots true p as far I know. I haven’t worked with black magic hardware only aja so can’t help with the codec. Hope that helps.

Sure does. Just wanted to make sure going from 29.97p to 59.94i would be easy and clean with just a file based workflow. Its my understanding doing this through an I/O card like AJA or my BMD Decklink card would be hardware based out to tape. Whereas I’m relying on software conversion on export.

Normally i’ll cut at 23.976, export and add pulldown via AE or Compressor. But I’m not adding pulldown with 29.97p. I guess the conversion is simply splitting each P frame into 2 i fields creating 59.94 fields at 29.97fps. Just making sure this is normal practice.
