HI all, I’m looking for a good workflow solution. We are working on multiple projects for a client and shooting everything 1080p23.976 AVC Intra onto P2. We are required to deliver tape masters of the final program for the client. Several years ago we were using a DVCPRO HD tape workflow so we have a panasonic 1200a deck. For the last few projects for this client we have been mastering and crossconverting to DVCPRO HD 1080i with that deck, but I would prefer of course to master to 1080p. The drum has just failed on that deck and we’re debating either replacing it ($6,000) or upgrading to a new deck (perhaps a good condition 1400 @ $15,000). Other than this client (and our past catalogue of videos), we’ve moved to tapeless, so I don’t know that we can justify spending much more for something like an HDCAM SR deck. From what I understand there isn’t a deck that will lay back DVCPRO HD 1080p23.98. Anyone know of any other options? We would prefer DVCPRO HD only because we need the backward compatibility. FYI we’re editing on MC with a Nitris DX. Thanks for any advice…

DVCPRO HD decks do not record at 23.98. Only 59.94 if 720p or 29.97 if 1080i. If recording 1080p 23.98, it can be recorded as 1080i29.97.

The only tape formats that allow 1080p 23.98 recording are HDCAM and HDCAM SR. And it would be best to rent those decks when you need them.
