I am in the market for a second monitor for my 2011 27″ iMac.

The more obvious choice would to get another 27″ 2560x1440p monitor, but I’m concerned with how the monitor may handle scaling the source video (mainly 1080p) up to 1440p.

I will be using the 2nd monitor as most of use do (palettes, bins, desktop real estate, etc) but I will also be using it as a client/viewing monitor while editing/animating in FCP, AE and sometimes Avid.

My main issue is what the monitor will do to a 1080p signal, and how much artifacting and/or noise will be introduced to the image. Yes I could switch the output to display raw pixels, but that would leave me with an image that is smaller then the full 27″, yet it would be sharp as a tack (in theory)

The other choice is to go with a 1080p monitor, but the extra pixels with the 1440p are great to have, especially when you have multiple bins of clips to glance through.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in this?

    thanks!
