[Tom Wolsky] “ure someone’s not running at 23.976?”

That’s my thought too and can be easily confused. Many times when people say 24p, they really mean 23.976 which is an assumption that your audio editor might have made. Double check that he’s running 24.0.

How can I make double sure I am at 24. The timeline settings have an option for 23.98 and 24 and I have always been working in 24. Is there another place or setting I should be checking.

    Thank you so much.

Your screen grab shows 24, you can change it to 23.98 by opening another empty sequence, hit apple-0 to open the settings then change the frame rate to 23.98. You are working at 24.0 now.

So this will check to see if they are in 23.98 – “Have your sound editor coform their mix in a 29.97 fps project, and export those files to you. 29.97 and 23.98 are essentially the same as far as audio is concerned.”

Also to add to this one of the reels that the music editor had delivered us in the past has a ghost 2 pop where is should be. It shows up only when I zoom in at a specific level in FCP. And there is another 2 pop that you can hear and see and this is at the same location as the more recent deliveries he gave us… where it is early. You can only hear the early one. They have told us over and over again that they are working in 24 frame per second. But you can never be too sure.

Also what does the semi colon mean with audio files in FCP. It couldn’t be that they are working in drop frame at 24p right? Cause that should be impossible. Some audio files have semi colons and some do not.

Drop frame has nothing to do with video/audio speeds. Just how the computer counts and assigns frame numbers… don’t worry about that.

I’m not sure what you’re saying about ghost 2 pops….

Are the mixes in sync at the audio house? Did you give them a quicktime to mix to?

We have a music editor and a sound designer. I give them both 24 frame per sec QTs with the Apple Pixlet codec with timecode burned in.

The ghost 2 pop is new to me as well and just confusing me more. Aside from that ghost 2 pop strange issue… out true issue is…

They say the FFOA and LFOA match my list and QT on their end. Once they export and I put it into my timeline is when we see the tail 2 pop does not line up correctly and dialogue is not in sync.

I have asked them for a 29.97 conform although unfortunately they are in a crunch and I am not sure when or if they will delivery this.

    FFOA and LFOA?

Ok, if they mix is in sync on their end then the problem is between their export and your import.

Is the mix you are getting too long? try putting a 99.92% speed effect on it in FCP. that would correct for a 24fps mix to 23.98. OR do the reverse, speed the mix up to 100.08%

First Frame of Action and Last Frame of Action… so they know where to start the music/sfx in the black when dissolves are involved, etc. These all line up on their end along with the 2 pops.

The speed effect didn’t seem to fix it. But I like your idea. I would love to be able to find out one way or another what frame rate they are working at without disturbing them… since I already heard back from the music editor… he is not able to make a conform export of 29.97 for me to test it out unfortunately.

ok, so I think your speed change idea did work. When I make each of the wav files 99.9% in speed, they fit perfectly. Not sure exactly what that means…

That they are working at 23.98? Or that my timeline is playing back not at 24 for some reason.

So this means that they are giving me a 24 mix??

“try putting a 99.92% speed effect on it in FCP. that would correct for a 24fps mix to 23.98.”

Cause like I said, when I changed the speed of the audio to 99.9% in speed the 2 pops then lined up.

I really just want to find out if I need to fix something on my end or need to tell them they are working in the wrong speed. If it is on my end I also need help on what to do since my timeline is set for 24.
