I’m about to edit a project shot in HDV 1080i. My final output will be standard DVD and Vimeo HD (1280 x 720). I have received advice that I should edit my footage in its native format, but I’d like to be able to zoom in on some of my interview footage occasionally without compromising the image quality. To do that, I thought I could edit in a 1280 x 720 sequence because that will be my largest final output size. The tricky part is that my footage is interlaced, and the only option I can find for a 1280 x 720 sequence in FCP is progressive.

Would I need to change all of my footage to progressive before starting? I’m assuming that would be very time consuming, so I’d like to avoid it if possible. Are there other options? If it is my best option, I have HandBrake transcoding software, would that do the trick?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

    Hi Nathan,
Just edit your 1080i footage in the 720p sequence.
Before exporting drop a de-interlacing filter (no the one of FC) in all your 1080 clips.

Thanks Rafael. If not in FCP, how would you recommend I drop a de-interlacing filter on my clips?

Best deinterlacer with the least time consumption is JES:

    JES Deinterlacer

Does a great job and takes so much less time than Compressor.

Thanks Mark. I just looked over the JES Deinterlacer… any tips on settings for the best quality for 1080 60i to 1080 progressive?

On the input tab, I clicked on top field first (remove jaggies and remove noise set at 10 are selected).

On the project tab, I selected deinterlace (use top field, adaptive, and normal height are checked).

I left color alone, and on output I choose direct (Apple Intermediate codec and Y420 are checked). Sound is copied.

Does that all sound right? Anything I’m missing?

    Thank again.

All that sounds fine but I would probably go with ProRes as your output. Under video output setting, choose export : Quicktime Movie… it’ll allow you any codec you have installed on your system. This will make it easier when you’re importing later into FCP. Try some different settings if you like as well – the great thing about JES is that it’s so quick you can afford to try different outputs and compare.
