1080i and 720p on the same FCP timeline
Posted by J clive Jordan on January 31, 2007 at 6:43 amI want to shoot in 1080i but I want to get the great slow motion benefits of 720p.
If I try to mix 1080i and 720p on the same timeline will that create problems? Thanks

January 31, 2007 at 6:45 amYou’ll have to resize and render all of the 720p footage.
Why not stick with 720P? I edit broadcast shows in that format, from both the Varicam and the HVX, for the History Channel. They upconvert to 1080p nicely at the end, using a Kona 3 card.

January 31, 2007 at 6:50 amI want to shoot in 1080i because I got a new cannon hv10 (helmet cam) that is more portable and it only shoots in 1080i so it looks like at least half the footage will be 1080i anyway.

January 31, 2007 at 6:52 amby resize and re-render do you mean I’d have to scale it up in the FCP?

January 31, 2007 at 6:58 amEither that, or with Compressor…or via a capture card like the Kona 3.
How will you be capturing the HDV footage and mixing it with DVCPRO HD? Via a capture card?

January 31, 2007 at 7:08 amActually I just learned how to acquire the HDV footage through firewire. You have to change FCP capture settings then it works just like any miniDV camcorder. (the video is compressed but it looks pretty good to me).
So I can use compressor to turn 720p into 1080i? Is it pretty straight forward?

But then your captured footage is HDV. Mixing this with DVCPRO HD from the HVX-200 isn’t all that easy. They are completely different formats. Mixing them by rendering doesn’t garner great results. And you cannot capture HDv as DVCPRO HD via firewire. You need a capture card like the AJA LH or LHe.
And upconverting via compressor is pretty straightforward. There are ADVANCED SETTINGS that list all most of the formats FCP works with. The drawback is that it will take a while to do this.

July 11, 2008 at 6:45 pmHi Shane,
Question,
Is their a difference in quality when you up convert from 720p to 1080 p using the kona. I don’t use the kona but have wondered about this. I have worked on projects and wonder if the quality will be better if I upconverted using the kona. I have been debating weather to just shoot 1080 all the time but it takes up more space but I like the picture quality of the 1080. Does the History Channel use manly 720p or do they work mainly with 1080p. Does 720p look almost as good as 1080p on the history channe. I shoot using the hvx 200.
Thanks,
Steve
