1080/60p

AVCHD files are best transcoded to ProRes. If you want to use clipwrap, you can, it transcodes as well as rewraps to QT movies. Problem you’re having is that you only rewrapped the files, and those files aren’t supported by the current versions of FCP.

I would suspect it’s not playing at 60fps then. More likely 30fps, in which case you won’t see a big difference. You will see a difference 60 vs 24.

John is correct, as transfer over FW does not support 1080 60p from this camera.

1080 60p is truly only supported in FCP via third party capture cards like those from Aja, Matrox and others. 108060p is NOT supported by FCP over a FW connection.

1080 60p, transferred as a video signal requires a dual link or 3G connection to your computer to allow FCP to see and handle it correctly, so while your camera may take a 60 fps it only outputs 60i.

Most professional tools that shoot 1080 60p ( F23, Alexa, HDC1500) only allow playback of that content at 24, 25 or 30 fps.

IF you do a search on The Cow for your camera model you will see some heated debates about the camera, capabilities and issues.

Thank you fro the input. It has helped. Clip Wrap works well and converting to Apple Pro Res 422 has gone smoothly in FCP.

Essentially though, in non-tech terms, as I understand the feedback, 60p is kind of pointless in that I am not really going to get “better quality” as, I cannot output to 60p, at least in FCP? I will always have to either output 60i, 30p or 24p?

And here is perhaps a more blunt straightforward question: with this Panasonic camera, I am shooting for only the web/distribution platform. Thus, it seems I should be shooting at the 30p setting, which better translates to web output settings?

The only difference between 1080p60 and 720p60 is about moving all that data-rate in real time.
You can not play 1080p60 from FC without a Dual-link system, but you can perfectly export a 1080p60 QT file from FC.

it is not a matter of output, more often than not the traditional 60p workflows were designed to offer the user slo-mo at acquisition allowing for better quality images.

Delivery Output of the 1080 60p is almost unheard of. I work at this level all the time- I have delivered 1080 60p content to one client only- and only when there was a specific reason to do so.

Normally the content is captured at a higher frame rate then played back at 24fps to achieve a slow motion effect.

Shooting and delivery of 1080 60p over the web is a waste IMHO.

I always recommend shooting 24/25 for web video’s- less frames mean higher quality images or smaller file sizes when using the same compression bit rate.

Think about it like this…
at 60 fps there is 2.5X as much content to compress and deliver than there is at 24fps.
