1080/60i progressive?

Hi everybody,

I have a Sony HDR-FX1000 camera that shoots HDV 1080i30 (60i). The manual says it can capture progressive scan images in 24p or 30p mode that are later converted to 60i and recorded to tape, but the captured video in Premiere is always 1440×1080, 1.3333, 29.97 fps, upper fields mpeg-2.

My final video needs to be suitable for NTSC broadcast (720×480) and Internet. Sometimes I get extra footage from a Canon EOS 5D that records 720p, and it seems most people prefer progressive video and 24p over interlaced.

1. How can I recover the progressive video? I heard someone say you could “reconstruct the frames” from 1080/60i to get progressive video, and it was not the same as “deinterlacing”.

2. An editor told me he shot and exported in 24p even if it was for standard TV broadcast, and it worked just fine. I thought this wasn’t possible. Could I just export everything in 720×480 progressive then?

3. What’s the best way to work an HDV video for 2 different outputs (TV and Internet)? Could I work in a HDV 1080i30 (60i)/DV NTSC timeline, and then just export to Quicktime DV NTSC and just change the fields order?

The FX1000 can shoot progressive but puts it as interlaced on tape.

But how do I “recover the frames” to make it progressive again? I heard this process was something different to deinterlacing.

Hi Mario,

I just did some searches and read some threads and apparently, if you put your footage into a 24p sequence, Adobe can automatically do the appropriate “pull-down” to remove the extra frames and return your footage to 24p.

You *might* have to right-click your clip and tell Premiere how to “interpet” your footage. This is not something I’ve tried before, just drop the HDV clip into the 24p sequence first and see what happens for starts

Hi Jeff,

I did some tests shooting in 24p mode, but when I capture in Premiere, the clips are 1440×1080, 29.97 fps, (1.33), upper fields mpeg-2… as if everything had been shot in 30p mode.

I’m going to get FCP soon, so hopefully I won’t have these issues anymore, since it has more options to capture video than Premiere.

So, is it possible to have a progressive output even if it is for standard TV broadcast? I heard it doesn’t matter, that is just theory after all, because the video is transmitted interlaced anyway, even if the TV network received a progressive or interlaced output. If this is true, I could export everything progressive, right?
