First of all, a big thank you to Rob for his tutorial and Jeremy for his patient help last night. I now have a pretty decent looking SD DVD from 1080 24p. But there are still some issues.

    Current Workflow

    – Export non self contained file from FCP using Current Settings
    – Import that into Compressor, use DVD 90 Best Quality preset with settings as follows
    -Video Format NTSC
    – Frame Rate 23.98
    – Aspect Ratio 16:9
    – Field Dominance is greyed out
    – Quality is set for One Pass VBR 6.2 Mbps
    – Resize filter set to Best
    – Output fields same as source
    – Deinterlace set to Fast
    – Rate conversion is set to Fast(nearest frame)

    1. Almost everything looks good on a 42″ LCD but still have a bit of flickering and text scrolls are jumpy and stair stepped.

    2. Having major problems on an old 26″ tube TV, some noticeable flicker all over but not terrible. Mostly it’s text and the fire side scene I’m having big problems with. Text on black shows dark banding across the text plane(not seen on LCD) and the fire creates a similar banding effect across it’s plane which is really noticeable because it flickers.

This project has the potential for national distribution and has to be right. I must be doing something wrong here. I’ve tried at least 5 different workflows, each one improving one aspect while degrading another. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.
