10.6.8 & Kona Kernal Panics
Posted by John Davidson on June 24, 2011 at 9:59 pmHi guys,
Just a heads up that 10.6.8 caused crashes and kernal panics on our 2.8 8 core mac pro w/ Kona 3. We uninstalled and reinstaalled drivers with no effect. I’m going to assume that new drivers will be out soon, but as for now we are running without drivers for our Kona 3.We also tried the beta drivers as a last ditch, to no effect.

“Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies): com.aja.iokit.kona3(8.0)@0x61050000->0x61097fff”Adam, have you updated the firmware on the cards also? – this line appears to say you are working K3 v8.0 driver
note;
I have not downloaded or tried any of the new AJA software release.gary adcock

June 25, 2011 at 8:58 pmI’m sorry – we deleted the drivers and all is well, except that we can’t use our Kona 3. So, I guess it’s not really that well. We’re out of town till Tuesday, but I’ll try to get our crash log sent in.

June 25, 2011 at 9:22 pmThe issue appears to be a conflict only when systems are updated to OS X 10.6.8. AJA will look into this matter more on Monday. Until then, it might be best to not update a KONA 3 system to OS X 10.6.8; other OS versions appear to work correctly with the KONA 3. Please contact AJA via email and attach a copy of your System Profile to the email. We are sorry for this inconvenience. In the majority of cases, an OS update will not impact the operation of an AJA product, but in this case it appears that the update does.

June 27, 2011 at 4:53 pmHi,
Just updated my OS to 10.6.8. I have a 12-core MacPro.
The firmware on my Kona3 is the 64-bit 2008 release. (Latest)
I upgraded to the 9.0.1 Kona drivers before upgrading to 10.6.8.I can’t say that this will work for everyone. But it works for me.

June 28, 2011 at 11:45 pmThe following information has now been posted to the AJA support page for the KONA 3:
Important Note: AJA recommends when using the KONA 3 with the KONA 9.0.1 driver under Mac OS X 10.6.8, that you boot your Mac in 64 bit mode. Please refer to the Apple support documentation for advice on how to do this properly:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773We apologize for the inconvenience that the 10.6.8 update has been for some KONA 3 users. An updated driver will also be forthcoming.

Unfortunately there are some Kernel Extensions that are 32 bit only that we need. Plus, the first MacPro systems cannot boot in 64 bit mode at all, since their EFI is 32bit only. So hopefully an updated version will be released soon…
