10.5.8 warning
Posted by Chris Paul on August 6, 2009 at 7:01 pmAfter updating to OSX10.5.8 this morning my Final Cut 7 system has suddenly become unreliable. Playback stall, stutters and shows the spinning rainbow wheel. OSX has crashed twice in the last 30 minutes. FYI.

August 6, 2009 at 7:08 pmIt looks like my LaCie eSATA array or card does not work well under 10.5.8. I changed to my fiberchannel array and the FCP issues have disappeared.

August 6, 2009 at 7:21 pmHow did you run the 10.5.8 update? I always recommend running the combo update not the smaller update.

August 6, 2009 at 7:26 pmI always recommend not auto updating. and only update if there is a feature/fix you need.
not worth the trouble otherwise.
my 002 cents.

August 7, 2009 at 1:13 pmI always use the Combo Updater, too. However, there seems to be a permissions problem with the Combo Update this time. If you Repair Permissions after installing the v10.5.8 Combo Update, in the list of repairs, you can note that a lot of files are having their permissions changed to ?——— and that might not be a good thing.

FWIW.

August 7, 2009 at 6:06 pmYou are correct about the permissions error problem. The current consensus is that the combo update should be applied twice before repairing permissions. This still doesn’t solve all of my issues so I will restore the previous version from my backup.

August 7, 2009 at 6:54 pmGood deal!
You have a backup!
You get a cookie!
Its amazing how many out here don’t backup before doing ANY update. Glad to hear that you are not in that boat.
To everyone else out there who doesn’t know this… ALWAYS backup before ANY update.
