1024×768 monitoring.
I’m working on a project in FCP with a Kona 3 at a 1024×768 resolution. The videos are for iPads, so we decided to work at the native resolution. The problem is getting it to look right on our monitors as we’re working.
In After Effects I can monitor at 720p and check a box to preserve the aspect ratio, so it ends up pillar boxed inside of 1280×720. Any ideas on how I can get Final Cut Pro to do the same? -

Nope.
The Kona’s will only deliver SMPTE video frames out of FCP,However- please note that The iPad will properly playback 1280x 720 HD materials- save yourself the grief and use 720 if you want to monitor your video correctly.

I totally agree.
At the very least, work in SD (4:3) and then resize to 4:3 square pixels and the other raster size later.

Well, it’s going in an app and really works best in 4:3 at the native resolution. Thanks for the input. It’s all unsupervised, so monitoring isn’t the world’s biggest issue.

What about working in a 1280×720 sequence, place the 1024×768 clips so it floats in black, then at the end, crop the black off in Compressor. May get a little loss of quality for RT playback but it is worth a shot.
