10 bit downconversion
I had a quick question, i have a project in Aja’s hdv preset, and now i want to deliver it to DVCAM but want to utilize the 10 bit downconversion for the best possible quality… How would i go about doing this taking advantage of the 10 bit?
My route was to export an uncompressed AVI file with the “AJA 10 bit 4:2:2 v210” as my codec… And then, import that uncompressed avi file back into premiere and then dub to tape now that its SD…
Is there a better way to deliver to DVCAM and 10bit downconverted SD?

Keep in mind that DVcam is 8 bit…it never hurts to maximize quality in the pipeline, but the tape holds 8 bits.
I don’t think there is much wrong with your workflow.
However, if you are trying for the highest quality SD master, I might try to output 10 bit uncompressed SD to DigiBeta…

hi, just to get the aspect ratios right, when i am exporting uncompressed from the aja HDV project , I select 720×486 wide screen with 1.2 ratio, so its 16:9… So later on, i can open a SD widescreen project and just pop this in, and it shouldlook right, correct?
Also, had a question, i want to make sure i am getting the 10 bit downconversion, so will this happen when i select the AJA 10bit 4/2/2 codec when i output thru microsoft avi?

one more question, when rendering from HDV to SD, should i pick lower or upper field first?? Thank!!

Again, the tape format you are exporting to isn’t really uncompressed…it’s DV. You can create an uncompressed file to master to a DVcam tape, but DV (NTSC) is 720×480, 1.2 PAR (for 16×9), lower field first. For general SD (NTSC) editing, preparing to feed a different format, you would want 720×486, 1.2 PAR (though most conventional analog SD formats are anamorphic and don’t even “know” what the aspect ratio is), upper field first.
So, yes the 10 bit codec is the one you describe, but keep in mind that if you are destined to master to DVcam, you might just as well choose DVcam frame size and field settings, even when it may make sense to avoid DV25 compression through the post process.

Do a field-motion test (through to final output format) when you decide on your workflow. 486 -> 480 or vice-versa can reverse fields, depending on how your software interprets what field order really means… Or worse, some software will “fit” 486 into 480 high, completely trashing the field separation.
i.e., learn from *my* mistakes!
