When I make a 10-bit AVI from AE7 (16-bit proj.) using 16-bit RGB source frames the result has contouring/banding/dithering in subtly shaded areas of the frame, just like the 8-bit version from the same frames. If I produce the same 10-bit AVI in AE6.5 the banding is not there. Both AVIs are played from the same 10-bit 1080PsF30 (BMD preset) PP2.0 timeline. The properties/file sizes of the two 10-bit clips (AE6.5/AE7) are identical (data rate, codec, etc.) when listed in PP2.0. Using the Multibridge 5.6.1 drivers.

    Any ideas…

Are you applying any filters in AE? Many filters still only work in 8bit space.

No filters, straight frames to AVI render.
